Veronica: The reason why I choose to do this topic was because I was very interested in prisons and how they are systemically run. In my AP Psychology class we were taken on a tour in the Cook County Jail which was very interesting to me because I always wanted to see the inside of a prison. I was able to experience it as well as knowing more than what I knew already about how it is inside. After that experience I was really interested in the subject so I decided to do my Fire Project on prisons with relation to false accusations and maintenance inside as well.
The skills I have mastered from gathering information and researching on prisons are analyzing good sources versus poor sources, as well as knowing how to cite information and adding footnote needs to improve. The sources is a very helpful skill because if I have good sources in my research paper I will be able to create a strong research paper. Also the way I did my citations has improved on how to find the information on the source that I need in order to create the citation. I still have to improve on adding the footnote to my document because at times my spacing is not correct which makes my paper look weird. In my final product I am most proud of not only myself, but my paper because I believe it is well organized and the quality is good. I am proud of myself for not turning in my assignment on the assigned date being up to date on it because it was hard to look for good sources while having other assignments to do as well. My call to action would be for everyone to be alert and care about others health regardless of where they are and to not be afraid to speak up to authority about injustice in prison or when sentencing a person. An organization that is in chicago and accessible to anyone that wants to support would be The Peoples Law Office located at 1180 N. Milwaukee Ave. |
Celeste: I choose this topic by thinking about what concerns me, prisons came up as an idea because of the field trip I went on for my AP Psychology class to Cook County jail. While I was there I saw many familiar faces, even people I used to be close with. I did some research to see if there was interesting information on my topic and there was so i went along with it. I have no idea how many hours I worked on this project for, I had some class time, but most was done on my own at home since I was not fortunate enough to be working on the project in multiple classes like other students. I faced a lot of difficulties on this project because most was needed to be done at home. I was really stressed out due to the fact that this project was not totally clear on what needed to be done, also stuff was added last minute which just led to more stress and frustration. Some of my experiences when conducting research and writing the paper was not wanting to move forward. I got tired of doing this project and didn't really want to finish at the end. I did not manage my time well, I saved everything until last minute. I learned that working with others is extremely difficult when you don’t have the same teachers telling us what was going on, we would often tme bump heads when we would not agree. My original goals for my project were still carried out by the time I was finished. I stayed on topic as plan. I think my biggest stretch was trying to hurry up and finish. I didn’t think I would be able to finish the whole project especially because stuff was added such as making a prezi towards the end. I would like to let my audience know that crime is everywhere, but there is ways of staying out of it by becoming more involved at school, or other activities to do on your free time. For my fire project, I believe we deserve a B, we worked hard on it but I know it is not perfect, so a B would be the grade we deserve. The skills I have mastered would be to stay on topic, throughout my project I did not go off on a tangent, I really need to work on citing all of my evidence, as well as providing more evidence. I am most proud of pulling through and completing the fire project. Time management was probably my biggest difficulty, I solved the problem by giving myself extra time to work on it the day before it was due. One thing about my finished project that I wish I could change would be having more evidence. I believe that my group and I did a some what good job about answering the question, it was just kind of confusing because we had similar ideas but explained them in different ways. The source that helped me the most with this project was this website that talked all about the history of prisons and how it improved throughout time, I found it really interesting because I didn't know half the stuff that I was reading. For students completing the Fire Project next year I advice them to pick partners who they have the most similar teachers with also to put time aside to do the project so you are not rushing last minute.
