Veronica: The connection between the field of psychology and the principles of social justice connects because most people around the nation have a psychological disorder and is not being treated properly. Social justice connects because those who suffer from any psychological disorder they are not getting justice because other may suffer the same condition and are being treated so thats how the injustice is seen through the proper care.
Three psychological disorders that surround my Fire Project issue of prisons are personality, drugs, mental illness. Personality has the root causes of crime which lead to those being incarcerated because their personality influences them to react a certain way because of the way they were taught when they were younger or how they have dealt with it in their past. So if they only know how to aggressively deal with their anger they will continue to do the same which will lead to getting arrested. Drugs play a big role in why a lot of people commit crimes and lead to having over crowded facilities which do lead to the variety of mental illness that the inmates develop in or out of the prison. As a journal of criminology stated “State prisons population have increased from 177,113 to 732,653 from 1971 to 1991.” Reason why they are increasing is because of the few reasons i just mentions but there are other causes of the increase as well but this just help prove that these psychological disorders are a reason why we increase population and if we take care of these we can reduce the amount of inmates. Three psychological concepts that can be applied to help with Fire Project issue of prisons are client-centered therapy, classical psychoanalysis, and behavior therapy. Client-centered therapy can be helpful in prison for the inmates to just help them release some tension in a safe environment not where other inmates are near. Classical psychoanalysis will help reduce prisoners because if we have more available in our communities those that are of a very aggressive personality the therapist can understand how they feel and suggest how to act once the prison feels that way. Behavior therapy can help as well with those that usually can’t handle their aggression towards someone and also if the person has an addict that they want to over come but don’t know how to. That can help the person know how to react when it is tempted to obtain it. There was an experiment conducted that was “Those who completed both ITC and aftercare were the least likely to be reincarcerated (25%), compared to 64% of the aftercare dropouts and 42% of the untreated comparison groups.” this does in fact prove that having the therapy inside of the prison can prevent them getting incarcerated again which helps being the population in prisons decrease. Psychology is important to humanity because psychology makes us understand humanity a lot better. It helps understand how we actually function and what it means. It can possibly be used to change the world because we can know how someone will react and so we can try to like for instance right now there is a lot of violence so we can try to to use biological aspects and cognitive psychology to actually change the way people act to certain actions. My major takeaway will forever be the visit to the jail. But also the chapter I truly enjoyed was learning because when we were doing the project about classical or operant conditioning I enjoyed it and now I can train other people for my benefit. I just loved everything about it. Also learning about phobias this chapter just made me know a lot more about myself but also about others as well. Marvell, Thomas.
